Ancestry has energed within modern families as a popular hobby...everyone curious about relatives from deep in the past or surprised by long-buried secrets, and sometimes ever. forgotten fame and honor. We, the Bernardine Franciscans, have descended from a visionary trailblazer, She was Blessed Angelina of Montegiove and she lived as a Third Order Franciscan woman, having founded a new form of religious life in 15th century Italy.








Instead of becoming a cloistered nun, which was the only realistic option at the time, Angelina gathered a group of like-minded women to live a common shared life of prayer, simplicity and simple vows while remaining active outside their convent, serving those wi needs in their locality

Although Angelina had family and friends in the Order of St. Francis for support, she had an uphill battle with some clergy who objected to and resisted her ideas and vision. In due time she lived out her dream and enabled her sisters to plant the seeds of new foundations across Europe. The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters of today have recently discovered their ancestral story Angelina and their direct link to her early foundation of Sisters in Italy. Sometimes it takes good dose of curiosity and determined grit to research and excavate the archives of libraries and convents to thereby assemble the puzzle lost to time.








For over 500 years the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis have existed in houses of active contemplation and service to the people of God, expanded into professionally trained ministries across the globe, and explored new forms of leadership witness to justice, and commitment to Gospel life in the 21 century.
